Inside the textbook's Introduction, the authors describe their motivation for writing the book: [W]e are interested in using robots to improve quality of life, both for humans and animals. In the case of humans, the focus is on improving living conditions, by allowing people to perform such activities as walking or doing chores, even if they have a disability. For animals, the emphasis is on improving quality of life by allowing animals to live more freely in their natural environments. Authors S.K. Saha is the Distinguished University Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Texas at Dallas. He is the founder of the S.K. Saha Robotics Institute (SRSI) which was established in the spring of 2001. In 1998 he was the Technical Editor for a special edition of Science that was sponsored by NASA and included all of the papers that were presented at a workshop on "Robotics Research for the 21st Century" that was sponsored by NASA and the U.S. Office of Naval Research. In 2001 he was awarded the NASA Exceptional Service Medal by NASA for his work on this special edition of Science. His research is in the areas of robotics and mechatronics. He has published in these areas and coauthored two books, Robot Motion Control (Springer-Verlag, 2004) and Robot Analysis and Design (Springer-Verlag, 2007). His most recent book is Robot Motion Control: An Introduction (Springer, 2010). Sami Elkhatib is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Texas at Dallas. He received the B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tehran, Iran, and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1991. His research interests include robotics, digital signal processing, and pattern recognition. His recent publications include "Geometric Hashing with Applications to Object Recognition and Shape Matching" (with F. Lazar and J. M. Wolfe), which was selected as an "Outstanding Paper" of the IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition, and "Virtual Look-Up Tables for Data Compression," which was selected as an "Outstanding Paper" of the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation. He is the recipient of the 2008 Maricopa Achievement Award, the 2010 IEEE Aztec Outstanding Research Award, the 2011 IEEE Harry B. Weber Memorial Award, and the 2012 Pioneer Award of the National Robotics
